Chapter 17

“Emmie, Emmie, I’m going to be late.” Sadie leaped onto the bed, hitting my side with her boney kneecap. I blinked back a few tears before finally focusing my eyes on the clock sitting on my bedside table and stretched.

“Chill, girl, it’s only six. We got time, sweetie,” I moaned. Sawyer and I had stayed up till one, talking. I wondered whether Myles would genuinely approve of the path our relationship was finally heading. Sawyer informed me; he was positive he would. I told him I wish I had some assurance. All I knew for sure was that everything in our little world was right as Sawyer held me.

The sound of pure laughter filled the room, and a small hand tickled over my ribcage.

“Oh, no, the tickle monster is in my bed,” I said, trying my best to laugh.

Sadie giggled and took a nosedive under the blanket, trying her damnest to hide.

In one swift motion, I yanked the covers back and growled. Sadie squealed, displaying her missing two front teeth, and had my nose in a death grip.

“Good morning, Sadie,” I said, sounding like a squeaking chipmunk.

“Good morning to you, too,” she said, mocking my voice, and leaped into my arms. I cradled her and showered her face with kisses. My little angel, if she only knew how much I needed her.

I smacked my lips against her forehead and whispered, “Go get dressed, and we’ll go to the Pancake Factory for breakfast.”

“Daddy too?” Sadie stared up at me, wide-eyed. She jumped up and took off down the hall without another word.

I climbed out of bed, ran my fingers through my hair, and headed over to my dresser to grab an outfit before I took a quick shower.

Propped up on a picture frame was a manila envelope. It wasn’t there when I went to bed. Did Sawyer place it there in the night? I couldn’t focus on that.

Seeing Myles’s handwriting sent my heart throbbing in a pattern I haven’t felt in ages. I sat back down on the bed and carefully opened the envelope, then removed a folded letter.

Sawyer, damn dude, I never dreamed I would be telling you goodbye this soon. I envisioned us jamming together for decades. I can’t hurt anymore. I can’t hurt her anymore. You have loved her as long as I have. I should have let you win when we were kids. She would be happy and not lying in this hospital now if I had. Help her get over me. Teach her how to love again. Show her that you have always been the better man. I love you, brother. Take care of our girl until we meet again. Myles

“Angel,” I heard Sawyer’s voice yell. “Sadie bug.” It rumbled through the house until it reached my ears. I treasured the sound of that deep, masculine voice and had an instant and positive reaction to it. I had mixed feelings, however, about Sawyer never telling me that Myles knew how he felt all along.

It changed
